Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  Can I participate in sports and band at the same time?

A:  Yes!  We have band students involved in sports such as football, cheerleading, drill team, soccer, tennis, baseball, softball, cross-country and track.  If you are involved in a sport simply tell a director. We will work with you and your coach to ensure that you get to participate in both.

Q:  Can I be involved with other clubs or activities?

A:  Yes!  Simply tell a director which activities you are involved with.  It helps us work out scheduling conflicts if you tell us about club activities in advance. Clubs usually meet after school so it should not interfere with our rehearsals.

Q:  Do I need to audition for band?

A:  That depends on the band. You do not need to try out for Marching band or Concert band. However you do need to tryout for Wind Ensemble, Symphonic band, Jazz Band and Percussion (percussion is by invitation only).

Q:  Are there any fees required?

A:  We do not charge a set fee to participate in band.  You are required to purchase items such as t-shirts, shoes, flip folders etc. If you chose to go on band trips then you will need to pay for the cost of your trip. If there is a serious financial need, please see a director. We do not want financial difficulties to be the reason someone decides not to be in band.

Q:  I am not sure I want to be in band.  What should I do?

A:  You can never really know if you like something until you try it. Attend band camp. Give us a chance to make you part of our band family. If after a couple of weeks you feel that band is not for you, at least you can say you gave it a try.

Q:  Can I be in band for all four years?

A:  Yes!  Over 95% of the freshmen that join band are still in band when they graduate. When you spend as much time together as band students do, you become a family. Many of our graduated seniors will tell you that the thing they miss the most about high school is being in the band.

Q:  Will band cause my grades to slip?

A:  NO!!!  Because we are a band family, we help each other out in academic classes. We offer tutorials to help keep you focused on your academic classes. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that students involved in band have higher scores in math, reading, ELA and science.

Q:  What happens after marching season?

A:  After marching season we start concert season. Everyone is divided into ability-based bands. Those bands then work on music for concerts as well as UIL. Color Guard and Percussion will eventually start performing in Winter Festivals that compete throughout the year.

Q:  Does the band take trips?

A:  Yes.  MANY.  The marching band attends every varsity football game and 3 contests. The concert bands attend Solo and Ensemble as well as Concert and Sight-reading.  We take BIG trips every other year. In the past we have taken trips to San Antonio and Dallas. We hope to add a trip to Florida very soon.

Q:  Do I have to be in band to be in Color Guard, Percussion or Jazz Band?

A:  You must be enrolled in a band class to be in Jazz band.

You must have director approval to be in Percussion class.

To be in the Colorguard you must tryout during the yearly tryouts or have director approval.
